By Gerry Wright, is the story of John (Roy) Reardon, 9 February 1891 - 14 September 1914, one of the first two New Zealanders to become submariners in 1914.
This is the story of a young lad from Kaikoura who joined the Navy in November 1907 and travelled the world in his brief career. When Australia established its own Navy in 1913 the lad transferred to that navy and volunteered for the submarine service.
When the submarine, while on patrol off German New Guinea on 14 September, 1914, disappeared without a trace, he was the first New Zealander to die in the Great War, later referred to as World War I.
After many searches the submarine was eventually found a century later.
